Michael Saunders
Michael Saunders is Professor (Research) Emeritus in the Department of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University. He obtained his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford in 1972 (advisor Gene Golub). He is known for contributions to mathematical algorithms and software in linear algebra and optimization. From 2005 until 2019 he taught the class Large-Scale Numerical Optimization (MS&E 318 and CME 338).

Research Interests
- Numerical optimization, numerical linear algebra, linear/nonlinear programming, sparse matrix methods, iterative solvers.
- Algorithm design/implementation for constrained optimization, sparse linear equations, sparse least squares.
- Multiscale optimization problems in systems biology. (MSBC)
